13 Easy Ways to Shake Up Your Work Day

For When Your Work is Feeling... Meh

It happens to all of us — your daily routine starts feeling stale, nothing is exciting, and you’re just… bored by the monotony.

Especially for those of us who are self-employed or have created more intentional career paths for ourselves, it can feel a little confusing when this feeling creeps along… because isn’t this what we wanted????

You start to wonder: Is there something wrong with me? Should I quit my job? Should I get bangs?

And while the answers to these questions may be yes, likely you just need to shake things up — even in VERY small ways. Our neurodivergent friends know more than anyone the benefit of adding a pop of novelty to the mundane parts of life.

A non-exhaustive list of small things to do when work is feeling mehhhhh:

  • Change your desktop/phone wallpaper

  • Change the system colors on your most used apps (email, Slack, etc)

  • Get a fun pack of your favorite office supplies

  • Play an ambiance video on your TV or 2nd monitor

  • Get a new candle or scent for your work area

  • Join a coworking session to keep you accountable

  • Pick a playlist you normally wouldn’t

  • Dress up!

  • Dress down!

  • Work from a more casual setting (your couch)

  • Work from a more formal setting (fancy hotel lobby)

  • Work from a public space

  • Work from a different seat or room

Don’t forget that sometimes, all it takes is a small change to snap you out of autopilot and make things feel new again :)
